gallery cleanup, trying to return

Wed Mar 25, 2009, 9:30 AM
I've recently been cleaning up my gallery and scrapbook, trying to weed out the less-than-amazing photos and organize in general. I've also deleted pretty much anything that can be considered "lineart" from my scrapbook after learning that dA has become a source for ill-informed 12-year-olds to find "lineart" that they can color in and call their own. NOT THE CASE WITH MY WORK. (see previous journal entry) I won't get into a big rant (again), but my favorite line so far on the subject is, "Coloring in lineart helps me learn to draw!" NO. Coloring books do not help children learn to draw, they help them learn to follow implied rules, and filling in "lineart" is esentially coloring in a coloring book. You are not learning to draw, you're learning how to use crayons.

Ahem. Anyway, I've removed almost all of my cemetery photos from my featured gallery, and I'm considering removing most of them from my account altogether; a lot of them are more documentary than artistic. I'm also thinking about moving ALL of my photography to Flickr; photos get more attention there and my dA gallery is currently overrun with photography.

As for my long-standing absence from dA, it can be attributed mostly to my being busy with school, work, and life. I have been making some art, but it's mostly academic and not anything I'm particularly proud of. I will post some new works soon, though. If anyone is still following me, I appreciate it. :)

About using my art

Sun Nov 16, 2008, 7:56 PM
It recently came to my attention that lots of dA users use the search feature to find sketches and/or lineart that they can color or trace and then post as their own art. I'm not sure how this is seen as ok. In my mind, this equates to art theft (except in the case that the lineart is offered as free for others to color, which I know some people do). Every image on dA has a copyright notice below it, but somehow people still can't figure out that another person's art is NOT FREE.

Online art theft drives me right up the wall, mostly because it seems like common sense that if you didn't make it, it's not yours, but also because it's so difficult to enforce. Most people who steal art will either ignore confrontation about it or straight up deny it, even when it's extremely obvious. I had been noticing that I get a lot of :+fav:s on a few pencil sketches in my scraps, and today I realized that people are actually just saving them so they can use them later and call them original work. This is completely unacceptable, so I thought I would put it on the record (i.e. in my journal, lol) that NONE of my art is free for general use. I have no problem drawing an outline for someone to color if I'm given credit and compensation, I'll even trade with most anyone so long as the integrity of my characters is not jeopardized. So if you want something, just ask; don't take.

So. Busy.

School and a social life work wonders for killing a person's online presence. Or so I've been learning. Last week I turned in my BFA portfolio, which will hopefully get me into the program at school. I haven't been drawing at all lately because I've been so busy with school, work, and friends, and I don't regret any of it, but I do wish I had more time for creativity.

I need to totally revamp my devArt account.....my massive series of cemetery photos takes up waaaaay too much space in my gallery, and most of them belong in scraps anyway. And my clubs are out of date, I don't think I'm officially a member of any of 'em anymore, lol. I'll figure it out.

believe it or not...

I'm alive! And still making art!

This summer has been extremely busy for me...I've been through three jobs (but the current one is a winner!), my old car died and I had to get a newer one, my laptop died and I had to get a newer one, I drove to Vermont to visit my family last week, most of my best friends are out of work and I've been spending time with them lately, I've been steadily racking up debt, I forgot to fill out the FAFSA, and I start back to school in three weeks. Where did the summer go?!?!?!

Perhaps needless to say, but I haven't been doing much on the art front. I still have a few sculptures (both of which I'm very proud of) from last semester which I need to photograph, and I have a few fun little sketches that need to be scanned, but other than that I've been neglecting my imagination. At the moment I cannot locate my Photoshop disc, and I'm dying to color some things and whatnot...darn. But I am not dead, and I've been very inspired lately, so hopefully the few folks who watch me haven't forgotten about me! I haven't forgotten about devArt, I promise!

creative journal title here

I'm really not inspired to write a journal right now, but I wanted to move the other one off the page. I uploaded a lot of new traditional art today, mostly stuff from my various art studios this semester. Unfortunately the best pieces from my Figure Drawing and 3-D Design classes are with the professors currently for grading, but I'll try to post them when I get them back.

The weather's gonna be crappy all week...anyone else ready for summer?
